Buzzing with History and Nature

On October 19, we hosted a unique and educational Kids' Club event at the farmers' market with the NYC Department of Records and Information Services and BeeFavored. It was an afternoon filled with discovery, learning, and hands-on activities that brought together history, nature, and community in a way that left a lasting impression on everyone involved.

Exploring NYC's History with the "Documents in Time" Sorting Game

The NYC Department of Records helped our young participants dive into the fascinating world of archives and historical records. As part of the "Documents in Time" Sorting Game, kids explored a "mystery box" filled with various records such as photographs, maps, letters, government documents, newspapers, and books. They learned about the roles of Municipal Archives and Libraries, sorting these items into meaningful "collections" and connecting the dots like real-life archivists. This hands-on approach made history engaging and helped the children understand the importance of storytelling and preservation. Through this activity, our young historians discovered how archival records help us piece together the story of our city's past and how libraries continue to provide access to knowledge and culture.

A Sweet Lesson in Urban Beekeeping with Bee Favored

Theresa Crichlow, founder of BeeFavored, brought the buzz to the market with an introduction to urban beekeeping. Kids learned about bees' vital role in maintaining a healthy environment and how urban beekeeping keeps our city buzzing. As part of the activities, each child received a maze plant to take home, encouraging them to start their pollinator-friendly gardens. The excitement didn't stop there—marketgoers had the chance to taste delicious honey samples, gaining a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into beekeeping.
