Dry Herbs
Share
On August 16th, our Kids Club brought hands-on fun to NYC DOT Summer Streets at the Dyckman Street Rest Stop! Children explored nature's scents and textures by crafting herbal pouches filled with fragrant favorites like sage, spearmint, choco mint, and more. Adults also took an interest and stopped by to get herbs! The activity encouraged sensory play and sparked curiosity about plants and their uses. We also handed out veggie crown kits and coloring sheets to keep the creativity going, giving kids more ways to express themselves and celebrate healthy living. It was a joyful afternoon of learning and education!
Here's how to make herb pouches with kids:
- Gather Materials: You'll need breathable fabric squares (like muslin or cheesecloth), ribbon or twine, dried herbs (lavender, rosemary, chamomile, etc.), and optional essential oils.
- Prepare the Herbs: If using fresh herbs, dry them thoroughly. If needed, kids can help crush or chop the herbs to release their fragrance.
- Assemble the pouches:
Place a handful of dried herbs in the center of the fabric square.
Fold the fabric over the herbs, creating a little pouch.
Tie the pouch securely with ribbon or twine. - Add Scents (Optional): Kids can add a few drops of essential oils that complement the herbs for a more pungent fragrance.
- Personalize: Encourage kids to decorate their sachets with drawings, stickers, or fabric markers.
Tips for making it a successful activity:
- Engage the senses:
Let kids explore the different herbs by smelling and touching them. - Tell stories:
Share fun facts or stories about the herbs to make it educational and engaging.
Make it personal:
Allow kids to choose their favorite herbs and personalize their sachets to make them unique.
