Healthy Memory Match
Share
On Sunday, August 9, the Kids Club team at BxPE Farmers Market swapped their usual coloring sheets for a bright stack of memory cards. They made learning about healthy eating into a fun brain game.
How the Game Worked
Each child sat at the table and looked at a grid of face-down cards. Each card showed the name and picture of a fruit, vegetable, or other healthy food. Kids took turns flipping two cards at a time, trying to find matching pairs. If they found a match, the cards stayed face up. If not, the cards were turned back over. With each round, everyone got to practice and improve their memory.
The different foods on the cards got everyone talking. Kids pointed out foods they knew from home, asked about ones they hadn’t tried before, and shared which fruits and vegetables they liked best. By the end, the table was full of excited shouts like "I found it!" and "wait, I remember that one!"

More Than Just a Game
Memory-matching games help kids in more than one way. They build focus and concentration, which are useful skills beyond just playing games. These games also help kids remember what they see and learn each week at the market. When a child turns over a card and recognizes a carrot, a mango, or a bunch of kale, it helps them connect the foods they see at home and at the market to the bigger idea of healthy eating.
Because the activity was a game instead of a lesson, learning felt easy and fun. Kids stayed interested through each round, excited to find matches. This shows that teaching kids about healthy food works best when it’s truly enjoyable.
