Kids Activity: WIND CHIME
Share
Creating a wind chime is a terrific way to entertain your little ones with a creative and hands-on activity. It allows your kids to explore their artistic talents while also letting them create their delightful sounds. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you and your kids make a lovely homemade wind chime using simple materials.
Here's what you'll need for your DIY Wind Chime:
- A small cardboard box with a lid
- Yarn
- Beads
- Scissors
- Ribbons
- A small cup (something that you can easily punch a hole into)
- Color pencils (for decorating the small cardboard container)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the base of your Wind Chime
- Start by poking a hole in the middle of your cardboard box where the yarn will pass through.
- Then cut a hole in the middle of your cardboard lid, allowing you to loop your ribbons and thread yarn with beads around the base of your wind chime.
- Let your kids decorate the container using colored pencils. Please encourage them to be as creative as they want!
Step 2: Attach the Yarn and Beads
- Cut several pieces of yarn to different lengths (about 6-12 inches each). These will be the strings that dangle from your wind chime.
- Have the kids thread beads onto the yarn pieces. Tie a knot at the end of each piece to keep the beads from slipping off. The more beads you add, the more colorful and musical your wind chime will be.
Step 3: Secure the Yarn and Ribbon to the Container
- Tie the yarn with threaded beads around the container lid with a hole in the middle, allowing the beads to hang down and catch the wind.
- Cut pieces of ribbon to similar lengths as the yarn. Tie the ribbons to the same hole where the yarn is attached. The ribbons will add extra color and movement to your wind chime.
- Close your container box with the lid. If it is loose, glue the pieces together. If it is tight, try removing some of your ribbons.
Step 4: Prepare the Tiny Cup
- Punch a hole in the bottom of the cup. Thread a piece of yarn through the hole and secure it with a knot on the inside of the cup.
- Attach a couple of beads to the bottom of your yarn so that the beads bang inside the cup when the wind blows.
- Thread the same piece of yarn through the middle of your cardboard container. You can use your beads to secure the container and cup in place.
Step 5: Hang and Enjoy
- Hang the wind chime outside where it can catch the wind. A tree branch, porch, or balcony are all great options.
- Sit back and enjoy the soothing sounds and beautiful sight of your homemade wind chime swaying in the breeze.
