Greenhouse Project: 3 Years in the Making – Growing Sustainable Urban Farming

After three years of planning and hard work, our greenhouse project is finally coming to life! This initiative aims to support local farmers, promote sustainability, and serve as an educational hub for the community. With the project well underway, we're excited to share our progress and invite you to join us in completing the next phase.

Breaking Ground: A Milestone for Sustainable Farming
On May 4, 2024, we broke ground on the greenhouse, marking a significant milestone after years of planning and preparation. Thanks to our incredible team and dedicated volunteers, we built the greenhouse in four weeks. By July 20, 2024, we produced our first set of seedlings—cowpeas, buttercup squash, and tour squash—which were transported to farmlands across the region. These crops are now growing strong and helping farmers recover from recent storms.

Current Crops in the Greenhouse
Our greenhouse is now thriving with a variety of crops. We are currently growing:

• Bok choy
• Arugula
• Spinach
• Basil
• Sorrel
• Chamomile
• Autumn flowers
• Lettuce
• Thyme
• Chives

These crops are part of our mission to create a sustainable urban farm that maximizes space and resources through vertical gardening. The greenhouse also serves as an educational space for the Harlem community, providing hands-on learning opportunities about urban farming, seedling production, and sustainable agriculture practices.

Celebrate Climate Week with a Greenhouse Tour
In celebration of Climate Week, we opened our greenhouse for an exclusive tour on Thursday, September 28. We toured inside our vertical gardening techniques, met the team, and learned how this project impacts our community. It was an excellent opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and discover how to build a more sustainable future. 

What's Next for the Greenhouse Project?
The next phase of the greenhouse project will focus on expanding our seedling production and introducing new crops that thrive in an urban environment. We aim to support even more farmers, offer educational programs for the community, and host workshops on sustainable agriculture practices.
